FIFA sanction on Bafana Bafana an embarrassment – Minister

South Africa’s Sports, Arts and Culture Minister, Gayton McKenzie, has described FIFA’s decision to deduct points from Bafana Bafana as an embarrassment to the nation and world football.

FIFA on Monday awarded Lesotho a 3-0 win in their March 21 Group C qualifier, after it was confirmed that South Africa fielded Mokoena, who should have been suspended for accumulating two yellow cards earlier in the campaign.

Bafana, who originally won the game 2-0, have now dropped to second place on 14 points, with Benin Republic climbing to the top on the same tally. Nigeria remain third with 11 points, level with Rwanda in fourth.

In a statement, McKenzie said the blunder would be investigated.

“This development is deeply regrettable and has brought embarrassment to our nation and the game of football,” he said.

“The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture will lead a thorough investigation into the incompetence that led to this sanction. Accountability will be ensured, and a comprehensive report will be shared with the public.”

The Minister urged South Africans to rally behind Bafana as they push for qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“We must be the 12th man on the field for them in the last two games,” McKenzie added.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has confirmed it will appeal FIFA’s ruling.
