The Federal Government has announced plans for a low-key celebration of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, set to take place on October 1st, 2025.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made this known during a Pre-Independence World Press Conference held on Monday in Abuja.

According to the Minister, this year’s theme is “All Hands on Deck,” and activities marking the anniversary are being deliberately scaled down

“Activities will be low-key,” Idris said. “We started with the Jummat prayers on Friday and the Thanksgiving service on Sunday

He further stated tha as part of the events for that day, the government will unveil the National Value Charter, developed by the National Orientation Agency (NOA). It aims to promote national pride and responsible citizenship.

In his speech, he also said that a National Students’ Debate will also hold as part of the celebrations.

The Charter is said to be structured into two key components. The first, known as “The Nigerian Promise,” outlines the government’s commitment to core national values such as equality, freedom, inclusivity, peace, entrepreneurship, and meritocracy. The second component, called “The Citizens’ Commitment,” defines the responsibilities expected of every Nigerian citizen, including discipline, accountability, tolerance, leadership, and environmental

The Minister explained that the NOA will work with various community stakeholders and use digital platforms to promote the values outlined in the Charter. The aim, he said, is to build a more united, value driven, and responsible society
