“Did The Meeting Happen?” — Nigerians Question AI-Created Photo Of Tinubu And Kagame

President Bola Tinubu on Sunday posted an image on X (formerly Twitter) depicting him having a private lunch with Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame in Paris. The post, which included a Grok watermark in the bottom corner, immediately drew attention and skepticism from Nigerians who questioned the authenticity of the image. Grok is an AI-powered fact-checking and content-generation tool owned by X.

In his post, Tinubu wrote, tagging Kagame: “This afternoon, I had a private lunch with H. E. President Paul Kagame of Rwanda to discuss the current state of world affairs and advancing Africa in an ever-changing global landscape.” Aides to the president also shared the same image on their X handles with slightly different captions.

The image, however, bore the watermark of Grok, leading many social media users to question whether the lunch actually took place. Some commenters accused the president’s media team of generating a fake image. “Why are you posting fake images?” asked one user, while another commented, “They used AI to generate a fake picture. Fraudulent people.” Others criticized the media aides for failing to remove the Grok watermark before posting.

Despite the skepticism, the presidency has not confirmed whether the image was real, edited, or fully generated by AI. As of press time, the AI-generated image remained on both Tinubu’s and his aides’ accounts. Meanwhile, there was no mention of the meeting on President Kagame’s official X account; his last post dated December 27, 2025.

President Tinubu departed Lagos on December 28, 2025, for Europe to continue his year-end holiday and ahead of his official participation at the 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW 2026) Summit in the United Arab Emirates. According to presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the summit will bring together global leaders in government, business, and society to advance sustainable development under the theme “The Nexus of Next: All Systems Go.” The president is expected to return to Nigeria after the week-long event.

The controversy over the AI-generated image has sparked debate about the use of technology in presidential communications and the importance of transparency in public engagement. Many Nigerians have expressed concerns over the authenticity of images released by the presidency, emphasizing that AI tools should not replace actual documentation of official engagements.
