A devastating fire outbreak in Axim, Nzema East municipality of the Western region, has claimed the lives of three children, leaving three others with severe injuries.

The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, when a blaze engulfed the apartment, destroying properties estimated to be worth thousands of Ghana cedis.

According to eyewitnesses, a family of six was in the apartment at the time of the outbreak. The parents and the youngest child managed to escape, but the three other children, aged between 5 and 10, were burned beyond recognition.

A resident of the area, Lord Listowel, confirmed the incident to Connect FM’s Omanbapa morning show host, Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson.

“The survivors are currently at the Axim Government Hospital receiving treatment, but their condition is not encouraging,” he stated.

The father of the deceased children, Kwame Asare, who also sustained serious injuries, recounted the horrific events of that fateful night. “We all went to sleep at around 9 pm, just after eating.

At midnight, I heard a sound that I thought was thunder, but suddenly everywhere became dark and full of smoke. I was able to rescue my wife and one child, but I had sustained burn wounds and was helpless. I rushed out and started shouting for help, but it was too late. My other three children had already been burned to death.”

The remains of the three children have been deposited at the Axim Government Hospital for further investigations.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, but the incident has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the need for improved fire safety measures and emergency response systems.
