The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given the Federal Government 14 days ultimatum to meet its demands or face another round of crippling strikes. The National Executive Council issued the fresh ultimatum after its meeting held on Sunday, September 28, at the University of Abuja. In a statement signed by its national president, Prof. Chris Piwuna, ASUU accused the government of neglecting the university system and consistently ignoring its demands. If at the end of the fourteen-day ultimatum the Federal Government fails to address these issues, the Union may have no option but to, first, embark on a two-week warning strike and thereafter, a total and indefinite strike, the statement read.  Among the demands of the associations include the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, revitalisation funds for universities, settlement of outstanding salary arrears, and a sustainable framework for funding tertiary education. The Federal Government had earlier set up a committee chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Abel Enitan, to look into ASUUs proposals. But weeks later, nothing concrete has been communicated to the public. With the ultimatum now in motion, Nigerians may once again be bracing for the familiar shutdown of public universities if the demands of the lecturers are not metThe post ASUU hands FG fresh 14-day strike ultimatum appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.
