Anthony Taylor has been appointed to referee the Premier League match between Chelsea and Manchester City this weekend, despite being demoted to the Championship last week.

Taylor was demoted after making a controversial penalty decision in the Premier League match between Wolves and Newcastle United on October 29.

He awarded the Magpies a penalty for a foul by Hwang Hee-chan on Fabian Schar, but replays showed that there was minimal contact.

Despite the demotion, the Professional Game Match Officials Board (PGMOL) has decided to appoint Taylor to one of the biggest matches of the weekend.

Manchester City will welcome Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, with Anthony Taylor appointed as referee.

Taylor’s appointment comes after he refereed his first Championship match in four years last weekend.

Overall, the decision to appoint Taylor to the Chelsea vs Manchester City match is a bold one by the PGMOL. It will be interesting to see how it pays off.
