The extradition of a United Kingdom (UK) national suspected of murdering Agnes Wanjiru in 2012 is underway, the High Court heard Tuesday.

State Counsel Gikui Gichuhi informed Justice Alexander Muteti yesterday that the Attorney-General’s Office, Kenya’s central authority in extradition matters, has received and is processing the request for the suspect’s surrender from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

“As per our letter dated October 9, we forwarded two physical copies of the extradition request and a soft copy through the official email address to the UK authorities,” the state counsel stated.

“We confirmed receipt of one of the documents, which was stamped on October 13. We have initiated the extradition process and are now waiting for the Attorney-General to forward the request to the UK central authority.”

To strengthen coordination between Kenya and the United Kingdom, State Counsel Gichuhi explained that the transmission will take place through both physical and digital channels.

The Counsel also requested the court to schedule a hearing in January 2026 to review the progress of the extradition process once the UK authorities issue a formal response through diplomatic channels.

Meanwhile, representatives of Wanjiru’s family continued to express frustration over the prolonged inaction since her disappearance in 2012 and the discovery of her body two months later. They alleged that given that a first inquest had already implicated a British soldier in the incident, the prosecution had made little progress on the case.

In response, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) explained that the victims’ and prosecution roles in the Wanjiru case are distinct.

The ODPP further confirmed that it would spearhead the prosecution process while welcoming the family’s ongoing involvement and cooperation.

The prosecution reaffirmed its pledge to ensuring that the case reaches a conclusion as soon as possible.

But it appealed for patience, arguing that the extradition procedure involves numerous local and international stakeholders and hence is time-consuming.

“We will do everything within our power to move the matter faster,” the ODPP stated.

Justice Muteti directed the matter be mentioned on November 24, 2025 as part of monthly court mentions to track the extradition progress.
