Victorious Enugu State athletes who participated in the 2026 Abuja Para-Games will be officially received by the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, as a way of motivating them for their excellent performance.

The 3rd edition of the Para-Games was held from March 26 to April 3, 2026, at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja.

Speaking during an interview on an ESBS Radio programme, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Barrister Lloyd Ekweremadu, expressed excitement over the athletes’ achievements and assured that Governor Mbah would host the Enugu State contingent in recognition of their success.

He attributed the team’s outstanding performance to the Governor’s support and well-thought-out welfare programmes for athletes and officials. According to him, lessons learned over the past three years contributed significantly to the success recorded at the National Para-Games.

The Commissioner further noted that Governor Mbah has designed a comprehensive programme for sports development in the state.

He reaffirmed the Governor’s commitment to Enugu State hosting the 2026 National Sports Festival, adding that work will soon commence at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, as well as the Awgu Games Village. Other sporting facilities are also being developed in preparation for the festival, which is expected to host about 10,000 athletes and officials.

He emphasized that schools’ sports have become well established in the state, with the Secondary Schools Sports Championship held consistently over the past three years. He explained that organizing the competition in March provides adequate time to train discovered talents.

He added that three athletes identified through the programme participated in the National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, where two of them won medals.

Barrister Ekweremadu stated that the Secondary Schools Sports Championship remains essential for discovering hidden sporting talents in the state.

He also expressed optimism that Enugu Rangers will win the 2026 Nigeria Professional Football League title.

Furthermore, he explained, the state government is working with the National Sports Commission to establish a National Institute for Sports in Enugu. Efforts are currently underway to secure office space for the institute, which will facilitate training programmes for coaches, games masters, and games mistresses.
