The tragic death of E-sir is still fresh in the mind of his fans. Despite passing on over 2 decades ago, his music still resonates with his fans not only in Kenya but also in the entire East Africa.

E-sir was a trendsetter and most importantly one of the pioneer artists in the rap industry in Kenya. His impact was huge such that even after his death, his songs have been a reference point to new artists. The legendary rapper who didn’t live long to see his success was also famous for his passion in fashion.

Up-to-date, E-sir’s legacy still lives on especially through his timeless and classic music. Some of the songs that have kept his legacy alive include, Moss moss, Boomba Train, and Leo, just to name a few.

E-sir’s musical journey

E-sir, real name, Issah Mmari Wangui, was born and raised in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi. This helped shape him to become a great musician.

Issah Mmari burst into the Kenyan music industry at a time when local artists struggled to catch up with the trend set by the western culture. However, a young E-sir ‘took the bulls by its own horns’, as he came up with a style that resonated with the urban youth culture.

Rise to fame

He rose into fame through his hit-song, Jo, featuring, his close friend, Nameless. The song, Jo, became an instant hit in Kenya. It dominated the airwaves for several months as youths fell in love with the rapper. As a result, there was huge demand for more music from E-sir.

With no time, the ‘Young’ rapper composed other great songs including, Mos Mos and Nimefika. His elegance and prowess in composing songs that blended Swahili and Sheng earned him a reputation as the ‘king’ of urban music in Kenya.

That’s not all, Esir also collaborated with some notable musicians such as Nameless, Big Pin, K-rupt, Mr Lenny and Brenda. To cement himself as an influential figure in the music scene, his songs were produced by Ogopa Deejays.

E-sir’s Impact on Kenyan music and culture

Issah Mmari Wangui’s first album ‘Nimefika’ was not only meant for songs but represention of the Kenyan culture. The album entailed songs of different genres including, dancehall, hip hop and kapuka. These songs put Kenya music beyond its boundaries and showcased the true culture of the country.

E-sir’s brief career helped set stage for the new generation in the music industry. His prowess in composing songs with both Swahili and English, bridged the gap between the local and international music industry. This brought a belief to Kenyan Artists that they can as well be as good just like their international colleagues.

Several musicians like Khaligraph Jones, Nameless and Nonini have acknowledged E-sir’s influence in the musical journey. He surely paved way for most successful musicians in Kenya.

E-sir’s tragic death

Unfortunately, E-sir died as he approached his peak. The iconic musician passed on in March 2003 through a tragic road accident. This happened as he headed to Nairobi after performing at a concert in Nakuru. During the fateful day, E-sir was with fellow musician, Nameless who survived. He died while 21 years old. The sudden death of the young rapper left the entire nation in shock. Many believe that he died before fulfilling his potential.

His untimely death left a huge gap in music industry in Kenya. His legacy still lives on through his great songs. E-sir’s passing was a profound loss to millions of his fans who still believe he is the best to ever do it.

Legacy

E-sir still lives on. For instance, his influence inspires the new generation of musicians in Kenya. His music is played in radios, TV stations, and clubs. In addition, several artists, fans and media houses hold events to celebrate and remember his legacy.
