Zee secures FIFA World Cup rights for India in a landmark deal that will bring football’s biggest tournament and dozens of FIFA events to Indian audiences through 2034.

MUMBAI: Zee Entertainment has secured the FIFA World Cup rights India package, ending months of uncertainty over how millions of football fans would watch the 2026 tournament. The agreement was confirmed just days before the World Cup begins on 11 June in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The deal marks one of the most significant sports media acquisitions in Zee’s history and gives the broadcaster a stronger position in India’s highly competitive sports market. Financial details were not disclosed, although FIFA had previously reduced its expectations after lengthy negotiations with potential bidders.

The FIFA World Cup rights India agreement extends beyond the men’s 2026 tournament. According to the joint announcement, Zee will hold media rights to 39 FIFA events through 2034, including the FIFA World Cup 2030 and the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027.

The outcome ends a prolonged standoff between FIFA and broadcasters in one of football’s largest viewing markets. Industry reports suggested several major media companies explored the opportunity, but Zee ultimately emerged as the successful bidder. Previous discussions involving JioStar and Sony did not result in agreements.

For Indian football supporters, the announcement removes concerns about access to live coverage of the expanded 48-team World Cup. The tournament is expected to attract significant viewership despite many matches being scheduled late at night for Indian audiences because of North American time zones.

The FIFA World Cup rights India acquisition also reflects Zee’s ambition to expand beyond entertainment programming and build a stronger presence in premium sports broadcasting. Investors welcomed the development, with Zee shares rising following the announcement. by Zee, bringing the 2026 tournament and major FIFA events to viewers nationwide.
