Yuletide: Benue police commissioner orders patrols, bans fireworks

The Benue State Police Command has ordered the deployment of police officers across the state for the yuletide.

The command also banned the use of fireworks, stating that the law against them is still in force.

A statement by the command’s spokesperson, SP Catherine Anene, quoted the state Commissioner of Police, George Chuku, as giving the directive to all the Divisional Police Officers.

The statement read in part, “The CP directed this in a conference where all area commanders, divisional police officers, and tactical commanders were in attendance.

“He warned all officers to ensure the security of lives and property within their area of responsibility, to ensure that they secure all entry and exit routes, and to carry out intensive motorised patrols of government facilities, churches, parks, and densely populated areas where people go to celebrate.

“In addition, CP warns against the sale and use of ‘knockouts’ and ‘fireworks’ and hereby calls on traditional rulers, religious leaders, guardians, and parents to warn their children, wards, and faithful to refrain from such practices.”

The CP also advised groups displaying masquerades to be careful so that they wouldn’t infringe on other people’s rights.
