Emmanuel Kwada

In an honest and candid assessment, Mr. Emmanuel Kwada, the managing editor of TGNews, has penned an opinion piece reflecting on the remarkable journey of Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri.

“I have followed the political trajectory of Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for years with keen interest,” Kwada writes. “Rarely does a leader emerge who combines steady ascent, tangible delivery, and enduring public affection in the volatile landscape of Nigerian politics.”

Yet, Governor Fintiri embodies exactly that rare combination in Adamawa State. From his days as a member and later Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, through brief but impactful stints as Acting Governor, to his current position as the duly elected Governor serving his second term—now approaching eight years in the executive seat, Fintiri has amassed nearly a decade of influence over the state’s direction.

This totals roughly ten years of effective rulership when factoring in his acting periods and legislative leadership.

What stands out most profoundly is not merely the length of his tenure but the depth of transformation he has brought to Adamawa.

The state, once grappling with stagnation, insecurity, dilapidated infrastructure, and waning hope, now wears a new face—one of progress, pride, and possibility.

During a recent visit to my home state, even someone like me—who prides himself on rarely losing his way—found himself pausing to ask locals for directions.

The landscape has changed so dramatically that familiar routes now feature flyovers, dualized roads, renovated public spaces, and bustling economic hubs that were once unimaginable.

This personal anecdote underscores a broader truth: Adamawa indigenes are not tired of Governor Fintiri.

If constitutional provisions allowed a third term, many believe—and I concur—he would win comfortably, perhaps with an even wider margin than before.

Why can’t Fintiri be humiliated politically? The answer lies in three unbreakable pillars: delivery on promises, hearts won through inclusive governance, and integrity that remains intact.

These elements have insulated him from the usual pitfalls that befall leaders in Nigeria—scandals, unfulfilled pledges, or perceptions of aloofness.

Governor Fintiri’s political journey began humbly in the Adamawa State House of Assembly, where he rose through ranks to become Speaker.

His leadership there was marked by maturity and consensus-building. Twice he served as Acting Governor—first briefly in 2012 and more notably in 2014 following the impeachment of then-Governor Murtala Nyako.

Even in those short periods, he demonstrated decisiveness and left memorable positive imprints, proving his readiness for higher responsibility.

In 2019, he contested and won the governorship under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), overcoming initial hurdles including an inconclusive election and a supplementary poll.

His re-election in 2023 was emphatic, reflecting growing trust. Approaching eight years as Governor, his administration has touched every sector, fundamentally altering the state’s edifice.

Infrastructure stands as perhaps his most visible legacy. Adamawa has witnessed an unprecedented boom in road networks, bridges, and urban renewal.

Flyovers in Yola, such as the Police Roundabout interchange—one of the best in the Northeast—symbolize this shift.

Rural roads have expanded significantly through programs like RAMP II, connecting communities and boosting commerce.

Markets, stadiums, and the dualization of key entry points like the ‘Welcome to Yola Gate’ have reshaped the capital and beyond.

These projects earned him multiple awards, including repeated recognition as the best-performing governor in infrastructure development, even from cross-party figures.

President Bola Tinubu has personally commended and inaugurated some of these initiatives, underscoring national acknowledgment.

In education, Fintiri has prioritized access and quality. Over 1,670 classrooms renovated, 21 new model schools constructed, three science secondary schools underway, distribution of tens of thousands of desks, fencing of schools for safety, and provision of boreholes.

The Free School Feeding Programme in primary schools has increased enrollment, reduced dropout rates, and tackled malnutrition. Scholarships and teacher employment have further strengthened the sector, ensuring no child is left behind.

Healthcare reforms have been equally revolutionary. Every ward now boasts a functional Primary Health Care Centre.

Five new 60-bed cottage hospitals, revival of abandoned facilities, a dialysis complex at Yola Specialist Hospital offering free services, and employment of over 4,000 health workers have improved access and outcomes.

These investments address long-standing gaps in a state prone to health challenges.

Security has seen remarkable gains. Through collaboration with federal agencies, community engagement, and logistical support, the administration has curbed insurgent threats and banditry that once plagued border areas.

Lives and properties are better protected, fostering an environment where development can thrive.

Economic empowerment and agriculture form another cornerstone. Modern farming techniques, infrastructure investments, and initiatives like the Fintiri Business Wallet—launched with cash support for thousands of small-scale entrepreneurs—have boosted productivity and self-reliance.

Youth and women benefit from targeted programs, reducing unemployment and stimulating local economies.

Traditional institutions and social welfare have not been neglected. Respect for royal fathers, promotion of peaceful coexistence, and prompt salary payments to civil servants reflect a holistic approach.

These achievements are not abstract; they are visible, measurable, and life-changing. Adamawa now attracts investors, earns national awards (including on digital transformation and urban infrastructure), and stands as a model of purposeful governance.

Politically, Fintiri’s invincibility stems from this record. He has not humiliated opponents through underhanded tactics but outworked them through results.

His broad appeal cuts across ethnic, religious, and partisan lines. Even critics concede the transformation. Public sentiment suggests deep affection—if a third term were possible, he would likely secure it with ease.

Another undeniable fact is that Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has truly won the hearts of the indigenous people of Adamawa State, particularly those from the diverse minority ethnic groups often referred to as the “Gongola people.”

The Gongola Peoples Forum (GPF), a prominent socio-cultural organization, serves as an umbrella body representing various indigenous tribes across the region—including groups from Adamawa and neighboring states like Taraba, Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, and Borno.

The forum is dedicated to fostering unity, preserving cultural heritage, promoting peace, and advocating for the recognition and autonomy of these minority ethnic nationalities, who have historically sought greater inclusion and identity separate from dominant influences.

In recent times, the GPF has repeatedly shown strong support for Governor Fintiri. For instance, during its grand cultural fiesta held in Yola in December 2025 to mark the first anniversary of the creation of seven new chiefdoms and emirates (such as Hoba, Madagali, Michika, Gombi, Dumne, Fufore, and Maiha), royal fathers, ethnic leaders, and forum representatives hailed the governor’s visionary leadership.

They praised him for reshaping the state’s socio-cultural landscape, restoring dignity to indigenous groups, and promoting unity and grassroots development.

The event became a platform to celebrate Fintiri’s contributions, with leaders describing his actions as a historic milestone that has given hope and renewed identity to the Gongola people.

This endorsement is no surprise. Governor Fintiri, himself from the Marghi ethnic group in Madagali—a minority community—has consistently demonstrated that he understands and prioritizes the needs of these indigenous tribes.

His policies, including the creation of new traditional institutions after decades of advocacy, have addressed long-standing demands for recognition and inclusion.

As long as this unity within the Gongola Peoples Forum and among the minority tribes remains strong, any candidate endorsed by the group—or perceived as aligned with their interests, like Governor Fintiri—stands to benefit immensely.

The forum’s backing carries significant weight in the state’s political space, given its ability to mobilize diverse ethnic groups across communities.

The people see Governor Fintiri not just as a leader, but as one of their own who has proven trustworthy and unlikely to betray their aspirations.

This deep-rooted trust and affection position him strongly for continued support in Adamawa’s volatile political landscape, where genuine connection with the grassroots and tangible delivery often determine electoral success.

Adamawa people appreciate stability and progress over frequent change for change’s sake.

Of course, no leader is flawless. Challenges like national economic headwinds persist, but Fintiri’s prudent management and focus on priorities have mitigated them better than most.

As I reflect on my recent visit—marveling at changed skylines and hearing locals speak glowingly of “Fresh Air” (his popular moniker)—I am convinced: Fintiri’s political strength is earned, not imposed. He delivered, won hearts, and kept his integrity. In an era of cynicism, that is revolutionary.

Adamawa’s story under him inspires hope. May his legacy endure, guiding future leaders toward service over self.
