The World Health Organisation has issued a stark warning regarding the looming threats of diseases and disasters leading to death and disability.

In a message marking the 2024 World Health Day, the organisation emphasized the urgent need to address these global health challenges.

World Health Day, observed annually on April 7, aims to raise awareness on significant health issues that require special attention.

The theme for the 2024 World Health Day is ‘My health, my right’, advocating for universal access to quality healthcare, education, safe water, clean air, adequate nutrition, and non-discriminatory environments.

The WHO highlighted the growing threats to the right to health worldwide, with diseases, disasters, and conflicts proving to be significant contributors to mortality and disability.

Moreover, the agency raised concerns about the impact of the climate crisis fueled by the burning of fossil fuels, leading to air pollution that claims a life every five seconds.

The WHO’s council on the Economics of Health for All revealed that while many countries acknowledge health as a fundamental human right in their constitutions, significant gaps exist in implementing laws to ensure universal access to healthcare services.

Emphasizing the need to address these challenges, the 2024 World Health Day theme underscores the importance of individual health rights.

The WHO called on individuals to be aware of their health entitlements, including access to quality care, privacy, informed consent, and protection from discrimination, among others.

In addition, the organization urged governments to implement various measures such as taxing harmful substances like tobacco and sugar, promoting clean energy, and ensuring fair working conditions for healthcare workers.

Investing in healthcare infrastructure and prioritizing primary healthcare services were recommended as crucial steps for improving global health outcomes.

Transparency, accountability, and public involvement in health decision-making were highlighted as essential components in addressing health inequalities and promoting health rights globally.

In conclusion, the WHO emphasized the importance of safeguarding health rights during conflicts, protecting healthcare facilities, and upholding access to health services in adherence to international humanitarian and human rights laws.
