What Should Women Presidents Wear?

The New York Times has a story today, pondering what a woman president should wear — based on the oodles of pantsuits on display in The Diplomat. (No spoilers please, I haven't started watching the new season yet! But seasons 1 and 2 were excellent.)

Vanessa Friedman's point (gift link) is that Hollywood should be a bit bolder, more imaginative, in their display of women presidents and their attire. That dark, somber suits play it too safe. Indeed, she notes,

[i]n the real world, many women in politics have begun to stretch those notions, whether it be Angela Merkel and her brightly colored jackets, Hillary Clinton with the white pantsuit that became a rallying cry or Kamala Harris and her pussy-bow blouses. That the wardrobes of their fictional avatars are being reduced to their most basic common denominators is depressing.

I thought it might make an interesting discussion here. What should women presidents wear?

My $.02 basically comes down to “whatever the heck she wants…” but I think something that's missing in the NYT article is a recognition that, as we often say here, a suit is sometimes the easiest thing to put on in the morning. I can understand wanting to pick interesting suits for bigger speeches (as Michelle Obama often does in real life), but on a day to day basis I feel like she should be comfortable, something the skintight dresses and sky high heels from Veep or House of Cards don't quite allow for.
