Former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh has opened up about the difficult conditions he faced during his time as head coach of Nigeria’s national team, revealing that the absence of basic training equipment made his job significantly harder.

Oliseh, a former Juventus midfielder, was appointed Super Eagles coach in 2015 after Nigeria failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations

Speaking on his YouTube platform and on the Oliseh’s Global Football Insights Podcast, he detailed the operational challenges that defined his short but intense spell in charge.

“When I was coaching the Super Eagles, we didn’t have the equipment,” Oliseh said bluntly.

He recounted moments where training sessions had to be delayed simply because the team lacked basic kits.

“There were times we had to postpone training because there were no extra jerseys available. We had to wait for the ones the players wore in the morning to dry after being washed,” he explained.

“Sometimes I took the boys to training, but we couldn’t go at the usual time because we were waiting for their clothes to dry.”

Oliseh described the situation as shocking, especially for a football nation with Nigeria’s history and reputation.

“It surprised me because a strong country like ours should not have problems getting sponsors and basic gear,” he added.

Despite these difficulties, Oliseh’s tenure with the Nigeria recorded notable successes.

He guided the CHAN Eagles to qualification for the African Nations Championship in Rwanda and achieved respectable results with the senior team.

In 14 matches as Super Eagles coach, Nigeria lost just two games, scored 19 goals and conceded only six before Oliseh resigned in February 2016.
