A significant legal battle is set to unfold on July 31, 2024, as High Court Judge Howard Pemba will hear a case challenging the Malawi Congress Party’s (MCP) recent decision to impose new eligibility criteria for National Executive Committee (NEC) positions.

At a scheduling conference today in Lilongwe, Eddie Banda, the MCP member bringing the challenge, argued against the party’s new rule that candidates must have been active members for at least two years and held a previous party position to qualify for NEC roles.

This legal challenge comes just ahead of MCP’s elective convention, which will take place from August 8 to 10, 2024, and the outcome may affect the eligibility of candidates for the party’s upcoming elections.

Will give you more updates as the case unfolds…
