‘We liked your profile, but...’: Candidate rejected because previous employer’s office was 600 meters away

In India’s crowded tech hubs, it is common for rival companies to operate from the same road, business park or even the same building. But one software developer from Mumbai said that proximity itself became the reason for rejection during a hiring process.

The candidate shared a rejection email on Reddit, claiming a company refused to move forward with his application because his previous employer’s office was located “approximately 600 meters” away from theirs.

According to the email, the company said the decision was linked to “internal management policies related to confidentiality and data security.” The recruiter added that the rejection was “policy based” and “not a reflection” of the candidate’s abilities or professionalism.

The Reddit user, who identified himself as a software developer working in fintech in Mumbai, described the mail as “the most funny rejection mail” he had received.
