Werder Bremen head coach Horst Steffen has praised Victor Boniface’s attitude and character, describing the Nigerian striker as a likeable and dedicated addition to the squad despite his modest impact on the pitch so far.

Boniface joined Bremen on loan from Bayer Leverkusen this summer after an injury-hit campaign and has since made three substitute appearances, registering an assist in a 4-0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach. He also had a goal ruled out in last weekend’s Bundesliga clash with Bayern Munich.

Speaking to Süddeutsche Zeitung, Steffen highlighted the 24-year-old’s off-field presence as much as his football.

“I’ve come to know him as a very likeable person; he’s very personable, approachable, and dedicated to the team. We laugh a lot together; I think it’s nice when a player has such a sense of humour and shows such joy. He fits right into our group,” Steffen said.

The Bremen boss admitted Boniface is still short of his best form, but expressed confidence that improvement will come with more minutes.

“You can already see that he is getting better in his stride. He scored a goal against Bayern Munich, but it was unfortunately offside. But he’ll keep on trying. It’s clear we need him and have to get him into shape. In my opinion, he’s just not there yet, but we’re very happy with him – and he knows it,” Steffen told Kicker.

Boniface’s loan spell is seen as a chance to reignite his career and push for a Super Eagles recall ahead of Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin Republic.

The striker, however, has also drawn headlines off the pitch. A controversial Snapchat post sparked criticism in Nigeria for being disrespectful towards women, but unexpectedly gained global attention after Canadian rapper Drake commented on it and sent him a branded OVO bag.

Before injuries stalled his progress, Boniface enjoyed two prolific seasons with Leverkusen, scoring 22 goals in 42 league appearances. Expectations remain high that he can rediscover that form in Bremen colours.
