Newly released CCTV footage has revealed the tense moment when Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Kileleshwa Ward MCA Robert Alai engaged in a heated physical confrontation at a restaurant in Nairobi’s Kilimani area earlier this week, prompting a police investigation.

The footage, seen exclusively by local media outlets, shows the two politicians exchanging words that quickly escalated into a physical altercation, spilling into nearby seating areas and alarming restaurant patrons.

According to the CCTV clip, the incident began at around 4:01 pm, when MP Babu Owino rose from his seat and approached the table where MCA Robert Alai was seated. While initial exchanges appeared cordial, tensions quickly flared.

Roughly two and a half minutes into the footage, Alai is seen shoving Babu Owino, igniting a scuffle. The confrontation intensified rapidly, causing bystanders to scramble to safety as chaos ensued.

At one point, the footage appears to show Alai drawing a firearm, sending patrons recoiling in fear.

The CCTV also shows a female patron attempting to calm the situation, but the scuffle continued, drawing in members of the public inside the restaurant.

Despite the footage circulating online, Robert Alai denied brandishing a firearm, calling media reports a misrepresentation and insisting that no weapons were drawn during the confrontation.

Meanwhile, Babu Owino urged authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure accountability in line with the law. Police have confirmed they are gathering evidence to establish exactly what transpired.

Kilimani Sub-County Police Commander Patricia Yegon stated that both Babu Owino and Robert Alai have recorded statements with officers. Investigators are also interviewing restaurant staff and patrons who witnessed the incident.

“Based on the analysis of the evidence – reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing all those present – we expect to determine who actually committed an offence. Irrespective of status, necessary action will be taken,” Commander Yegon told journalists.

Law enforcement agencies stated that no one is above the law, and that the ongoing inquiry will guide any criminal charges or disciplinary actions.
