UEFA has given approval for La Liga and Serie A fixtures to be played outside Europe, allowing matches to take place in the United States and Australia, respectively.

The decision, which has sparked outrage among fans, will see Barcelona face Villarreal in Miami this December, while AC Milan take on Como in Perth, Australia, in February.

In a statement on Monday, UEFA acknowledged the controversy surrounding the move but emphasized that the approvals were “exceptional” and should not be seen as setting a precedent.

“While it is regrettable to have to let these two games go ahead, this decision is exceptional and shall not be seen as setting a precedent. Our commitment is clear: to protect the integrity of national leagues and ensure that football remains anchored in its home environment,” the statement reads.

UEFA’s decision marks the first time top-flight European league fixtures will officially be played outside the continent.
