Uber joins hands with Gautam Adani's Adani Group to set up its first data centre in India

Ride-hailing giant Uber is to set up its first data centre in India in partnership with the Adani Group, marking a major expansion of the ride-hailing company’s technology operations in the country.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi announced the development after meeting Gautam Adani in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, describing India as “a leading innovation hub for Uber”.

“As India fast emerges as a leading innovation hub for Uber, we are setting up our first data centre in the country with the Adani Group to test and deploy our tech,” Khosrowshahi wrote in a post on X.

The facility is expected to become operational later this year and will support Uber’s global technology ambitions from India.

“Ready later this year, this investment will help us build at scale, from India, for the world,” he added.

The announcement came a day after Khosrowshahi met Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to discuss Uber’s long-term plans in India, which has become a key growth market for the company.

Following the meeting, Khosrowshahi said Uber viewed itself as a long-term partner in India’s “Viksit Bharat 2047” vision, adding that the number of earners on its platform in the country had quadrupled since his previous meeting with the finance minister in 2022.

He also held talks with former NITI Aayog CEO and G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant during his five-day visit to India.

The move comes as global technology companies increase investment in India’s AI and data centre infrastructure, driven by rising demand for localised data storage and the government’s push for digital sovereignty.

OpenAI has signed on as the first customer for TCS’s new AI data centre business, which is starting with 100MW of capacity and could scale towards 1GW, while Reliance Industries is building facilities in Jamnagar and Visakhapatnam.

Amazon has also committed $12.7 billion towards cloud infrastructure in India by 2030.

Earlier this week, IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said Google was “seriously considering” manufacturing AI servers in India, adding that the government had encouraged global technology companies to explore local production.

The latest deal also strengthens Adani Group’s growing presence in the AI and data centre sector through AdaniConneX, its digital infrastructure venture.

At the India AI Impact Summit in February, Adani Group announced plans to invest $100 billion in renewable-energy-powered, hyperscale AI-ready data centres by 2035.

Last year, AdaniConneX partnered with Google and Bharti Airtel to develop a large AI-focused data centre campus in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
