ABU DHABI: UAE Svalbard Treaty membership marks a significant step in expanding the country’s role in global scientific collaboration and polar research. The UAE has officially joined the Svalbard Treaty following Federal Decree No. 125 of 2025, reinforcing its commitment to climate-sensitive regions.

Located between mainland Norway and the North Pole, Svalbard is known for its unique Arctic ecosystem, international research presence, and the Global Seed Vault. By joining the treaty, the UAE gains access to a framework that promotes peaceful cooperation and responsible scientific activity in the region.

The UAE Svalbard Treaty membership builds on the country’s existing involvement in the Antarctic Treaty System, extending its research footprint to both poles. This move aligns with the objectives of the Emirates Polar Program, which aims to advance scientific knowledge across Arctic and Antarctic regions.

The agreement enables UAE researchers to conduct fieldwork in Ny-Ålesund, one of the world’s northernmost research communities, where scientists from multiple countries collaborate on atmospheric and environmental studies.

Her Excellency Mariam Almheiri said the accession reflects the UAE’s commitment to scientific advancement and international collaboration, adding that it opens new opportunities for participation in Arctic research and joint expeditions.

His Excellency Abdulla Balalaa highlighted that the move supports the UAE’s broader climate agenda through science-based partnerships and knowledge sharing.

Meanwhile, Abdulla Al Mandous emphasised the importance of enabling UAE scientists to contribute directly to global research initiatives, strengthening climate resilience efforts.
