Dr. Ahmed Aliyu Mustapha, a former Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service and the Sardauna of Adamawa, has died at the age of 76.

He passed away on Thursday in Abuja.

Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri confirmed the news in a statement shared on his social media pages.

Mustapha, who served as Comptroller-General from 1999 to 2003, joined the Customs Service as a young cadet and rose through the ranks to lead the agency at the dawn of the Fourth Republic.

His tenure was remembered for strengthened anti-smuggling operations and active participation in national task forces against economic sabotage.

In recognition of his outstanding service, he received the Ministerial Award for Outstanding Performance in 1988.

As an elder brother to the Lamido of Adamawa, Alhaji Muhammadu Barkindo Aliyu Mustapha, and a traditional titleholder of Sardauna Adamawa, he also played a key role in the affairs of the emirate.

Even after retiring in December 2003, he remained respected within the Customs community and in Adamawa, where his counsel was often sought.

President Bola Tinubu, in a condolence message, described his death as a great loss to the nation, noting his service to the country and his contributions to Adamawa State.

He extended condolences to the Adamawa Emirate Council, the government, and the people of the state, while praying for Allah’s mercy on his soul.
