Lagos State marks one year since commercial passenger operation began on Tuesday 15th October 2024.

In its first year, Red Line moved from six daily trips to nine trips per day, slashed single-trip fare from N1,500 to N1,000.

To reduce waiting time, 3 additional train sets are set to join Red Line fleet, each consisting of eight carriages.

The Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line, operated by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), turned a year this month since commercial passenger operation began on Tuesday, 15th October 2024.

In its first year, the Red Line moved from six (6) daily trips to nine (9) trips per day and slashed single-trip fare from N1,500 to N1,000 from end to end to help increase the accessibility and popularity of the service.

“We began conservatively with a schedule of six daily trips (two morning, four evening) and, through efficient operations management, successfully scaled that service to nine trips a day starting in February 2025.”

“The decision to reduce the single-trip fare from N1,500 to N1,000 from end to end, coupled with the introduction of zonal fares, has dramatically increased the accessibility and popularity of the service.”

LAMATA said that the resulting surge in ridership validates the essential role the Red Line plays in providing sustainable, cost-effective mobility for Lagosians.

As part of efforts to reduce waiting time at each station, LAMATA also said it is set to receive three additional train sets, with each consisting of eight carriages.

The Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line, which shares tracks with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), stretches 27-kilometer between Agbado in Ogun State and Oyingbo in Lagos State.

Boasting eight stations at Oyingbo, Yaba, Mushin, Oshodi, Ikeja, Agege, Iju and Agbado (in Ogun State), the first phase of the Lagos Red Line has reduced travel times between Agbado and Oyingbo to just 55 minutes from close to three hours.
