The Happiest Churches Bring Generations Together

For years, churches have been asking how to attract younger adults. Conferences have been built around the question. Books have been written about it. Consultants have offered strategies, and churches have spent millions trying to become younger.

Perhaps we have been asking the wrong question.

A recent article in Super Age, drawing from the 2026 World Happiness Report and other studies, reached a conclusion that should cause every church leader to pause. The research found that one of the strongest contributors to happiness—for both younger and older adults—is meaningful relationships across generations. Younger adults gain wisdom, stability, and belonging. Older adults gain renewed purpose and fulfillment. Everyone wins.

That finding should not surprise Christians. Long before researchers discovered the happiness benefits of intergenerational relationships, the church was already living them. The healthiest churches are not those that perfectly target one generation. They are churches where every generation belongs.
