“The corruption level just keeps increasing. How can we keep trusting this VAR when they are not doing the right thing. We cannot keep on doing this.” – Chelsea defender criticizes VAR following an incident against Manchester United and the FA are planning to take action about this whole situation.

Mauricio Pochettino has fired a cleverly disguised joke at Premier League referees following last weekend’s VAR controversy. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has called for their defeat at Tottenham Hotspur to be replayed following the controversial decision to disallow Luis Diaz’s first-half strike.

With the scoreline at 0-0, the Reds were denied an opener despite replays showing Diaz to be a yard onside. The decision has been widely panned across the footballing landscape this week, with matters made worse due to nine-man Liverpool conceding a 96th-minute winner.

Pochettino, ironically as Spurs manager, previously questioned whether VAR would kill the spirit of the game. Then in its infancy, the technology interfered to award Manchester City a spot-kick – which Sergio Aguero missed – during a Champions League quarter-final clash.

“There’s a lot of work to do with VAR,” he said at the time. “We know there are many decisions that no one knows if VAR is going to be used or not, to check or not.

There’s a lot of work to do with VAR,” he said at the time. “We know there are many decisions that no one knows if VAR is going to be used or not, to check or not.

“Maybe technically it was a penalty because it was a handball, but we do not know the protocol. There are a lot of question marks and a lot of work to do.”

Fast forward to the present and issues regarding VAR continue to plague the game. Now in the Chelsea hot seat, the Argentine quipped how he supports the technology but has qualms over those controlling it.

“It’s two different things,” Pochettino said. “I trust in VAR. I trust in the car. But not the driver. That is the problem,” he told reporters. “I was very curious about the VAR many years ago. I think it’s a good decision, this technology with cross-the-line (goal-line technology) is important to keep and when it is offside, taking time is important for the referee.

“Then maybe we can argue about whether the referee needs to be more involved. It’s complicated to talk about because we all suffer. Human mistakes can happen. When that happens with technology, it’s difficult to understand but we cannot complain.

For me, it’s about simplifying the situation after many years. The most important thing is to give the power to the referees. It’s difficult when you see the action through the VAR, the situation that maybe makes the situation bigger, everyone who has played football knows the situation is not what is on the screen.”
