The Super Eagles of Nigeria have earned $2.5 million (approximately ₦3.56 billion) after finishing third at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, following a dramatic 4–2 penalty shootout victory over Egypt in the bronze medal match held in Casablanca.

The encounter ended 0–0 after regulation time, with Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali emerging as the standout performer. He saved two decisive penalties during the shootout, including one from Egyptian captain Mohamed Salah, sealing Nigeria’s ninth third-place finish in AFCON history.

Meanwhile, Senegal were crowned champions for the second time after edging tournament hosts Morocco 1–0 after extra time in a tense final played in Rabat. Villarreal midfielder Pape Gueye scored the winning goal with a powerful strike into the top corner, securing Senegal’s second continental title.

Prize money for the 2025 AFCON marked a significant increase. CAF President Patrice Motsepe announced that the champions would receive a record $10 million (₦14.23 billion), up from $7 million (₦9.96 billion) at the previous tournament in 2023.

Under the revised structure, Morocco, who finished second, received $4 million (₦5.69 billion), while Nigeria earned $2.5 million (₦3.56 billion) for third place. Fourth-placed Egypt took home $1.3 million (₦1.85 billion).

Teams eliminated at the quarter-final stage received $800,000 (₦1.14 billion) each, those finishing third in their groups earned $700,000 (₦996 million), while fourth-placed group teams received $500,000 (₦711 million).

The increased financial rewards underline CAF’s commitment to growing African football and providing stronger incentives for national teams across the continent.

Speaking earlier at a pre-tournament briefing in Rabat, Motsepe said:

“It was less than $5 million before 2023, and we increased it to $7 million. If you win now, you’ll get $10 million. That’s the key objective as we move forward. We will continue to increase the prize money for the most important competition in Africa.”
