Former Nigeria international Sam Elijah has advised head coach Eric Chelle to keep faith with goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali when the Super Eagles face South Africa in Tuesday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Nwabali came under criticism for his performance in the 1-0 win over Rwanda, where he was involved in a heated altercation and narrowly escaped a red card.

But speaking to All Nigeria Soccer, Elijah insists the Chippa United shot-stopper deserves continuity.

“He can’t be judged by just a match and I think he should continue. He is a great goalkeeper, he has great confidence, so on my own assessment Nwabali should continue as the number one choice for the South Africa game.”

The former defender admitted Nigeria’s performance against Rwanda was poor but stressed that tactical discipline, determination, and hunger will be crucial in Bloemfontein.

Nigeria sit third in Group C with 10 points, six behind leaders South Africa.

A win would revive their qualification hopes, while Bafana Bafana will be aiming to extend their lead and edge closer to the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
