‘So light’ – Chelsea had 9/10 window before getting rolled over at the last minute

Jason Cundy was delighted with Chelsea’s summer transfer window right up until the final hours of Deadline Day.

The Blues spent nearly £350million on new players – but Cundy has been left furious by their last-minute drama.

Enzo Fernandez departed to join Manchester City in a record-equalling £125m deal following a long transfer saga.

Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara was then soon identified as a replacement, with a deal agreed to sign him.

But things came crumbling down after the deadline passed, with the Ligue 1 side pulling out of the deal in a decision that left Chelsea accusing them of acting ‘in a deeply unprofessional way’.

The U-turn meant that the Blues were unable to sign a replacement for Fernandez after his departure, despite a late enquiry for Everton‘s James Garner, who they were willing to pay up to £65m for.

And that’s something that has really impacted the success of the window for Cundy, who thinks his beloved former club could find themselves in trouble in midfield this season…

Chelsea’s transfer window ‘plummeted’

Reacting to the collapsed Camara transfer, Cundy said on The Sports Bar: “Monaco have absolutely rolled us over…

“I’m not going to France on holiday ever again, they’ve absolutely rolled us over.”

He added: “From Chelsea‘s transfer business, I’d have probably given us an 8.5 or 9/10.

“But that has plummeted now, we are so light in the middle of the park, we’re so light.

“Two injuries in there and we are [in trouble].”

Chelsea sold Fernandez after already letting Andrey Santos and Dario Essugo leave the club too in the summer window.

It leaves the Blues with Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, Valentin Barco and Jordan Henderson as natural midfielders in the squad.

And that’s something that Jamie O’Hara has been left bemused by, as he questioned why they have strengthened a rival whilst making their own situation worse on Deadline Day.

O’Hara said: “I cannot believe that Chelsea have weakened the squad with Enzo Fernandez and gave him to a direct rival in Man City, which makes them way better in midfield.”

“That’s not the problem, the problem is we haven’t replaced him…selling Enzo wasn’t the issue,” Cundy replied.

“It’s £125m, the issue isn’t selling Enzo. The problem is we haven’t replaced him.”

Who did Chelsea sign and sell this summer?

If Fernandez had been replaced, then Cundy would have stuck with his impressive 9/10 rating for Chelsea’s business.

And that rating was so high following the £117m arrival of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, who has already scored and assisted for the club in two Premier League games.

Maxence Lacroix, Marco Palestra and Pep Chavarria also joined to strengthen the defence, while Henderson and Danny Welbeck were signed to add some more experience to a very young squad.

And the Blues acted quickly to replace Robert Sanchez in goal after an opening-weekend howler, bringing in Emi Martinez.

Meanwhile, when it comes to sales, Chelsea were also very active, letting Sanchez go on loan, alongside Alejandro Garnacho, Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile, Filip Jorgensen and Mykhailo Mudryk.

Tosin Adarabioyo and Trevoh Chalobah left permanently, with Liam Delap also leaving for a huge fee of £50m.

They also brought in over £120m from the sales of Marc Cucurella, Nicolas Jackson and Tyrique George.

Before, of course, they sold Fernandez to Man City for £125m, but failed to replace him on Deadline Day in the end.

And due to the big money brought in, Chelsea actually ended up making a profit in the summer window.

The Blues spent £349m but sold £382m worth of players, so made a profit of £33m altogether.

However, Cundy struggled to celebrate that, as they now continue the season with limited options in midfield.
