Sade Burrell’s story is one of resilience, determination, and triumph against the odds. Born and raised in San Diego, California, Sade spent her early years navigating the complexities of the foster care system. Despite the challenges, she never let her circumstances define her future. Today, Sade Burrell stands as a testament to perseverance, having recently earned her PhD in Educational Leadership from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD).

Overcoming a Challenging Start

Sade‘s journey was far from easy. As the second oldest of seven children, she entered the foster care system at a young age after she and her siblings were removed from their mother’s care. Moving between foster homes, a children’s center, juvenile hall, and a group home, Sade faced an unstable and often harsh environment. Despite these early challenges, she remained determined to change the narrative of her life.

The statistics for foster youth in California paint a bleak picture. Only 58% of foster youth graduate from high school, and just 3% go on to earn a degree from a four-year college. These statistics, however, did not deter Sade. Instead, they fueled her desire to rise above the expectations set for her.

Education: A Path to Transformation

Determined to succeed, Sade found her way to Cuyamaca College through the Unlimited Potential (UP) program, which supports foster and at-risk youth. Living in transitional housing at the YMCA and later participating in a home program that supported students from foster care, Sade worked tirelessly to support herself and her studies. She held down multiple jobs, including coaching young children in sports at the YMCA.

Sade’s hard work paid off. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Social Work from San Diego State University, where she was awarded a full academic scholarship through the Alex Smith Foundation. She then pursued a Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Southern California (USC), proudly proclaiming herself a Trojan. Her academic journey reached its pinnacle when she achieved a PhD in Educational Leadership from UCSD.

A Beacon of Hope and Advocacy

Throughout her academic and professional career, Sade has remained deeply committed to improving the lives of foster youth. Her doctoral research focused on understanding why only a small percentage of foster youth succeed in higher education. She examined the key factors that help these students thrive, aiming to replicate and expand those supports for others.

As an Associate Professor at San Diego Mesa College, Sade is actively involved in initiatives to make higher education more accessible to foster youth. Her work extends beyond the classroom as she advocates for policy changes that would ensure foster youth have the resources and opportunities they need to pursue their academic dreams.

Breaking the Cycle and Inspiring Others

Sade’s achievements are not only personal victories; they are a beacon of hope for her children and the community she serves. For Sade, breaking the cycle of hardship and showing her two children that anything is possible has been a driving force. “My kids get to see it. It’s like the cycle of abuse has stopped. I cry when I think about it,” she shared.

Her vision for the future is clear: to use her experiences and education to reform the foster care system, improve child welfare services, and inspire the next generation of foster youth to aim high. Sade’s commitment to this mission is also reflected in her book, “What Are You Reaching For?” which offers insights into overcoming obstacles and finding one’s purpose.

A Legacy of Change

Sade Burrell’s life story serves as a powerful reminder that with resilience, support, and determination, it is possible to overcome even the most challenging circumstances. As she continues to advocate for foster youth and work towards her goal of becoming a university president, Sade is not just defying the odds—she’s changing them. Her journey is an inspiration, a source of hope for foster children everywhere, and a testament to the power of education and community support.
