underrated podcasts

As someone whose vast majority of Spotify Wrapped total listening minutes is taken up by her extensive podcast rotation, I am no stranger to a podcast slump. As much as I love my go-to comfort listens, there are times when, after hours upon hours spent together, I just need a break from the same three voices. If you’ve grown tired of your podcast rotation and your half-asleep morning commute has been suffering as a result, trust me—I can relate. Thankfully, there’s an endless supply of fresh voices out there to tune into. To help narrow down the search, I’ve rounded up 12 underrated podcasts that absolutely deserve a spot in your listening queue.

1. What Went Wrong

If you love hearing about the behind-the-scenes insanity that is a Hollywood set, you’ll be absolutely hooked on What Went Wrong. Each episode dives into the nitty-gritty of what went wrong on some of your favorite productions. Remember all the drama surrounding Don’t Worry Darling? That’s exactly the kind of chaos they unpack, and it’s just as entertaining as it sounds.

2. If Books Could Kill

Have you ever been running late for a flight and, in the chaos, been forced to pick up a book at the airport because you left your latest read at home? If so, you probably know the airport book section is a very strange place. This podcast dives into those airport bestsellers, dissecting them in the most hilarious way possible.

3. Diabolical Lies

If you’re a Substack girlie who loves long think pieces on pop culture moments, Diabolical Lies is basically that in podcast form. Whether the hosts are discussing the Heated Rivalry craze or ethical consumption, you’ll walk away from every episode with a completely new perspective. The conversations will linger in your mind long after it ends.

4. The Cutting Room Floor

While definitely not the most underground podcast on this list, The Cutting Room Floor still doesn’t get nearly enough hype in my mind. Through enlightening interviews with some of fashion’s biggest figures, this podcast will teach you so much about the fashion industry. The conversations are refreshingly candid, and I love how host Recho Omondi isn’t afraid to ask the tough questions audiences actually want answered.

5. Tanis

One of my personal favorite podcast niches is docudrama series, and that’s exactly what Tanis is. Diving into the myth of Tanis, which you may recognize as the lost city from Raiders of the Lost Ark, where Tanis is depicted as a city buried by a massive sandstorm. Tanis is hinted at in ancient texts and real-world anomalies, and this podcast dives into it all to try to make sense of what Tanis really is. It feels like the grown-up version of the Shane Dawson conspiracy videos I used to love in middle school—just with a higher budget and more reporting. This investigation blends conspiracy theories, science fiction, and even the paranormal.

6. Fashion Neurosis

Another pick for fashion lovers, Fashion Neurosis is hosted by designer Bella Freud, as guests lie on her couch and explore the connection between fashion and identity. With guests like Helena Bonham Carter and Annie Leibovitz, this podcast features some of the most interesting conversations you’ll find online. It’s a fascinating look into how fashion is so much more than the clothes we wear.

7. 36 Questions

An extremely underrated podcast category I’m always recommending is fictional podcasts. This one has been living rent-free in my head since I listened to it years ago, and I still haven’t found anything quite like it. Told in three parts, this musical podcast starring Jonathan Groff and Jessie Shelton is the perfect listen for theater kids.

8. Not That Y’all Care

If you want a podcast that feels like laughing over inside jokes with your best friends for an hour, that’s exactly what Not That Y’all Care delivers. From hilarious prank calls to bits that seem to never end, this is one of those podcasts that will genuinely have you laughing out loud. Be warned: if you commute on public transportation, you may get a few strange looks when you can’t hold in your reactions.

9. Higher Learning

If you want a pop culture podcast that chimes in on buzzy moments in real time, this twice-a-week show will keep you fed. Hosts Van Lathan and Rachel Lindsay cover the biggest topics in Black culture, politics, and sports, offering their own perspectives on what’s taking up space in everyone’s mind. Whether you need someone to obsess over Sinners or rant about what the hell is going on in our political world right now, they’ve got you covered.

10. The Everygirl Podcast

Now, I know I’m a little biased, but The Everygirl Podcast should be a mainstay in everyone’s listening lineup. Whether you need financial advice, tips on becoming your most confident self, or guidance on manifesting your dream life, there’s an episode for you. From solo episodes with Josie to incredible guest interviews, each one offers accessible, practical advice.

11. Spilled

This podcast is packed with all the juiciest bits of history your AP World History class never got into. Featuring historic scandals, betrayals, rumors, and more, every second keeps me hooked on the drama. Plus, it gives you great fun facts to whip out at your next girls’ night.

12. Ad Lucem

Another one of my favorite fictional podcasts, Ad Lucem, will completely suck you into a new world. Starring Chris Pine and Olivia Wilde, this nine-episode socio-political thriller explores themes of technology and human connection that feel particularly relevant today. Listening to it feels like watching a TV show and will make your chores, workday, or whatever you’re doing fly by.
