Life happened, and it happened in a way I didn’t expect. I lost everything due to a bad investment. Every bit of money I’d saved for now and my future disappeared one day because of just one bad decision. I was broken into pieces. I walked over a bridge, and the voice in my head said, “Jump.” I crossed the inner road, and the voice said, “A car is coming. Just wait a little, and all this pain will end.”

I didn’t do any of that. Instead, I looked into the sky and saw hope for a better day. I still had my job I could earn from. I still had friends I could ask for help from. I still had my girlfriend, whose love kept me grounded. The world wasn’t a bad place after all. But when troubles come, they come in droves. Mom started getting sick. Dad needed money. My siblings’ fees had to be paid. They all looked up to me.

So I took loans from people. It got to a point where no one was willing to help because I hadn’t paid what I already owed them. I ran to my girlfriend and asked for help. I asked her to give me GHC10,000 and said I would pay it back in five months. I knew it was going to be hard to pay, but I needed the money. She was skeptical at first, but slowly I was able to convince her to give me the money.

The first month, I wasn’t able to pay her the installment I promised. It turned into a fight. She was scared she had lost her money. I promised she hadn’t. I gave her my word that I was going to pay and even pay interest on it.

The next month, I paid something small. She wasn’t happy, but she took it as half a loaf, which is always better than none. Life didn’t stop being hard, so it was difficult to honor the promise. I started betting, hoping that would be the way to get the help I needed. I lost the little that I had. One bad decision after another, until later I decided to stay disciplined.

God being so good, I started paying all those I owed and started paying my girlfriend too. It took over a year, but I was able to pay. The day the last amount hit her MoMo, she asked me, “You promised to pay interest. When is that one coming?”

I asked her to give me another month. I was able to pay her GHC2,000 extra. Right after that payment, she sent a message: “I can’t continue this relationship anymore. I’m tired. I think I need rest.”

She blocked me after sending the message. I had to go to her place and ask why. She said she was tired, so I should give her a break. When I asked how long the break would last, she told me she didn’t know. I thought I had done my best, so why was she leaving me? Why was she leaving me when life was getting better?

Erica Sarpomah, if you’re reading this, which I know you will, please don’t leave me. Life is getting better. You’ve suffered with me, and I want you to be the one I enjoy life with. Please say something. Kindly unblock me, and let’s talk again.

I was owing my girl a lot of money. I finished paying, and she left me. I don’t know how to feel about it.
