Security Shock in Akwa Ibom as Explosive Devices Found and Defused at Prison Facility

After a concerted security operation, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command discovered and neutralized explosive devices within the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Center.

In a statement made public on Monday in Uyo, Police Public Relations Officer DSP Timfom John stated that the recovery had prevented an impending disaster at the center.

According to John, the breakthrough came when reliable information about suspicious objects discovered across the prison was provided by penitentiary authorities.

According to her, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, BomPol Base 38, Uyo, and other tactical units were ordered to protect the area by Commissioner of Police Baba Azare after the report.

Two 90mm high explosive rounds and a 45cm length of burning fuse were found as a result of the command’s synchronized search and sweep operation, according to the police spokesperson.

One pair of pincers, one flat screwdriver, two pieces of 12mm iron chisels, and one 6cm conduit iron pipe were found by the police, according to her.

“The explosive devices were expertly rendered safe by the EOD team, neutralizing any immediate threat and averting potential fatalities and the destruction of vital infrastructure.”

In order to prevent any more threats, the command has strengthened security around the correctional institution and its surroundings through intensified monitoring, access control, and ongoing patrols.

She said, “To identify the source of the explosives and to capture those associated with the dangerous act, discreet investigation and technical analysis have begun.”

Residents were reassured by the police image maker that everything was under control and that no casualties had been reported.

She asked people to be on the lookout for any strange activity in their neighborhood and to report it to the closest police station.

Criminal elements were forewarned by the PPRO that any attempt to compromise public safety or target important institutions would not be tolerated.

Residents of Akwa Ibom were reassured by her that the command was still determined, proactive, and prepared to defend people and property throughout the state.
