School Records Zero University Entries in KCSE After PK Salasya Chased Away Principal

St Gabriel Isongo Secondary School, located in Mumias East Sub-County, Kakamega County, has recorded zero government-sponsored university entrants in the 2025 KCSE, after all 176 candidates failed to attain the minimum C+ grade required for direct university admission.

The school has posted a mean score of 3.039, placing it far below the national average, raising serious concerns about learning outcomes at the school.

In January 2024, angry parents, together with Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya, stormed St Gabriel Isongo Secondary to eject David Wanjala, the principal from the school, accusing him of failing to uphold the school’s academic standards

An analysis of the school results shows that 162 out of 176 candidates, or 92%, scored D+ or lower, locking them out of both university admission and most diploma courses.

Only 11 students from the school scored C plain and 11 scored C- grades, making them the only students who can qualify for Diploma courses.

Peter Salasya, the area MP on Facebook, said he will share the school’s results today but has yet to comment on the poor performance.

During the ejection of the former principal, Salasya warned that he would not condone school heads who are not performing in his constituency.

How Mean Grades for 2025 KCSE Candidates Were Computed

In his speech during the KCSE 2025 release at A.I.C. Chebisaas Boys Secondary School in Eldoret, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba noted that a key driver of the upward performance trend registered is the reviewed grading system, which has been in place since the 2023 KCSE cohort.

“As has been the case since the 2023 KCSE examination, the 2025 KCSE examination results have been graded using the reviewed grading system in which the overall grade at the KCSE examination considers Mathematics, the best-performed language among English/Kiswahili/Kenyan Sign Language, and the best-performed five subjects,” said CS Julius Ogamba.

KNEC computes the overall mean grade based on performance in seven subjects as explained below:

  • Two mandatory subjects:
    • Mathematics (compulsory for all candidates).
    • One language subject (the best performing among English, Kiswahili, or Kenyan Sign Language, if taken).
  • Five other best-performing subjects (from the remaining electives the candidate sat for).

According to statistics shared by the Education CS, 1,932 (0.19%) candidates obtained an overall mean grade A (plain) in the 2025 KCSE examination.

Of these, National Schools had 1,526 As (Plain) across the country.
