Ruto Allies Unleash on Gachagua: “You Will Blow Yourself Up Trying to Reach the President”

President William Ruto’s political allies have gone on the offensive against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, firing back sharply after he criticized the Africa Forward Summit and launched attacks on visiting world leaders. The counteroffensive, which unfolded on Wednesday, May 13, drew in cabinet secretaries, senators, and former ministers, all taking direct aim at the impeached deputy president.

Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome led the charge, delivering some of the most pointed remarks of the day. She described Gachagua as a “reckless leader” and a “walking time bomb,” arguing that his outbursts stem from disbelief that President Ruto successfully hosted more than 30 African heads of state in Nairobi.

“Gachagua, your recent criticism of the government, propelled by disbelief that H.E. Dr. William Ruto, the president of the Republic of Kenya, was able to host over 30 heads of states and governments, has exposed you badly. You are a walking time bomb. You will blow yourself and your team in an attempt to reach H.E. Ruto, and make no mistake; that is an impossible mission,” the CS wrote.

Wahome did not stop there. She also challenged Gachagua’s grasp of international relations, taking particular issue with his decision to publicly attack UN Secretary-General António Guterres and French President Emmanuel Macron in the same breath as pitching himself as a future national leader.

“You criticise the UN Secretary General and President Macron in one statement and then tell us you are taking us Kenyans somewhere. Apana!” Wahome remarked.

The backlash traces back to a Tuesday press briefing where Gachagua made a string of serious, unverified allegations against the visiting dignitaries. He claimed that President Macron is an accomplice in a Ksh 7.2 billion scandal, offering no evidence to back the accusation. He also alleged that Secretary-General Guterres was “dining with the propagators of the Sudan war”, a statement that drew immediate criticism from those who viewed it as a serious breach of diplomatic protocol.

Moses Kuria: “He Does Not Care for This Great Nation”

Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria also waded in, framing Gachagua’s remarks as a sign of someone willing to sacrifice national interest for political point-scoring. Kuria argued that whatever internal disagreements exist within Kenya’s political landscape, the successful hosting of a summit of that scale deserved recognition, not sabotage.

“The timing and flavour of Rigathi Gachagua’s comments on the Africa Forward Summit is further proof of a leader who does not care for this great nation. We may have our local differences, but for Kenya to host an event of this magnitude is something that all well-meaning Kenyans should be proud of,” Kuria stated.

Kuria also went after Gachagua’s credibility as an opposition figure, challenging him to produce even a single photograph of a diplomatic meeting since leaving government to form the Democracy for Citizens Party.

“I challenge Rigathi Gachagua to post even one photo of him meeting any diplomat as an opposition leader. Which leader of opposition can go for almost 2 years without meeting the international community?” Kuria posed.

Cherargei: “His Thinking Cannot Go Beyond Village Mentality”

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei brought the criticism to the Senate floor on Wednesday, delivering a pointed rebuke of what he called Gachagua’s failure to grasp the damage his words do to Kenya’s global standing.

Cherargei drew a pointed contrast between Gachagua’s conduct and that of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, arguing that even as a fierce government critic, Odinga consistently placed national dignity above political rivalry when Kenya hosted international events.

“It is sad that the current crop of opposition leaders, led by the impeached DP, tried to demean the international conference. His thinking cannot go beyond village mentality, and he only thinks about Wamunyoro,” Cherargei said.

The senator argued that genuine leadership demands a perspective that reaches beyond ethnic and regional politics, something he accused the DCP leader of being unwilling or unable to do.

“Despite that he was the opposition leader, when issues of international concern came up, Baba [Raila Odinga] would show up and be part of the conversation about Kenya,” the senator added.
