Manchester United has engaged in discussions with Getafe regarding the extension of Mason Greenwood’s loan spell with the Spanish club, as per a recent report.

Greenwood embarked on a 12-month loan agreement with Getafe last summer, following the dismissal of charges of rape and assault against him. During his time in Spain, the 22-year-old has thrived, tallying ten goals and six assists in 32 appearances.

Although his loan arrangement doesn’t include an option for a permanent transfer, Getafe, having secured a 20% sell-on clause, have expressed their keenness to retain Greenwood for the upcoming year.

According to The Athletic, talks have been underway for another loan deal, envisioning Greenwood’s continuation with Getafe for the 2024/25 season.

While Manchester United’s preference lies in a permanent sale, it’s believed that Getafe may not pursue such an option.

In the event of a lack of permanent suitors for the former England international, United might contemplate sending him on another loan to Getafe.

The prospect of reintegrating Greenwood into the United squad hasn’t been completely ruled out, with new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe willing to revisit the situation at the season’s conclusion.

Greenwood’s contract with United extends until the summer of 2025, with the club holding the option to extend it for an additional 12 months — a move they would likely make if he were to depart on loan next season.

His commendable performances in La Liga have drawn interest from several other clubs in the league, prompting United to consider all options for a permanent transfer before revisiting talks for another loan exit.
