My Wife

Becky Lynch made me more interested in a feud between her and CM Punk than her husband and CM Punk.

The fallout to Becky seemingly joining The Vision, or at least helping her husband maintain his vision, coalesced in Punk on one side of the ring and Becky on the other. At first I scoffed at Becky showing up in Seth’s stead, specifically because I didn’t like Punk dismissing her. He told her this has nothing to do with her but if memory serves, she’s the one who hit him where the sun don’t shine. This has everything to do with her. Becky made that point but thankfully, she got there through a different route.

Punk’s presence loomed over WWE for a decade once he left. Anytime an audience found themselves bored with a match or a segment, they chanted his name. It was the not-so quiet rebellion against whatever the territory thought was cool. As Becky reminded us, they did that far too often during women’s matches. Becky associated his name with apathy and rejection.

Despite how far she’s come since those dark days, she never forgot nor did she forgive the fans. More importantly, she didn’t let bygones be bygones with Punk either. Once he came at her husband, the idea of burying the hatchet anywhere but in Punk’s back became impossible. I get it. And if she wasn’t so Becky about it, meaning if she wasn’t insulting the crowd and being obnoxious while telling her tale, I’d feel more sympathy. That’s not to say I feel none, but I’d be more on her side since that’s a relatable story.

Therein lies what makes Becky so dope right now. She spins sympathetic stories while coming off as incredibly unlikable. I don’t know how she pulls it off but she does it every week. Punk was right when he said it’s wrong to minimize her to “just a wife” because she is The Man.
