Public Holiday: FG Declares Friday, Public Holiday For Eid-ul-Mawlid

The Federal Government has declared Friday, September 5, 2025, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Eid-ul-Mawlid, the annual celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

According to the statement, the government extended its congratulations to Muslims across Nigeria and in the diaspora on the occasion, urging them to reflect on the Prophet’s exemplary virtues of peace, love, humility, tolerance, and compassion.

The Ministry further encouraged Nigerians of all religious backgrounds to use the celebration as an opportunity to pray for peace, security, and stability in the country, while supporting ongoing government efforts to strengthen national unity and promote sustainable development.

“The Minister of Interior wishes Muslims a joyous and peaceful Eid-ul-Mawlid celebration. The celebration of Eid-ul-Mawlid offers us yet another opportunity to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood, promote peaceful coexistence, and imbibe the Prophet’s teachings of mutual respect and selfless service to humanity,” the statement read in part.

The government also appealed to citizens to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and security conscious while supporting policies aimed at fostering peace, unity, and progress across the nation.

Eid-ul-Mawlid, observed in the Islamic month of Rabi’ al-Awwal, marks the birth of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and is celebrated with prayers, processions, lectures, and charitable acts.

In Nigeria, the holiday is officially recognised as a national public holiday, underscoring the country’s significant Muslim population and long-standing tradition of observing major Islamic festivals. The occasion is frequently used by religious leaders and government officials to call for unity, particularly as the nation continues to confront security and economic challenges.
