People are Finally Paying Attention to J-Beauty—Here’s Everything You Need to Know

K-beauty has been the reigning queen of skincare trends for years now, but a new contender is coming for the crown. Japanese beauty, or J-beauty, is making its way west, and it’s challenging everything we’ve been taught on how to achieve flawless skin—in the best way possible. Its minimalist approach and emphasis on tradition is a stark juxtaposition to the 10-step beauty routines replete with novel products that have dominated our FYPs. And as a “less is more” kind of girl who suffers from dry, sensitive skin, I, for one, am loving the shake-up.

But alas, every new skincare craze raises the question: Does the regimen actually live up to the hype? I tapped Giselle Go, the co-founder of Tokyo-founded skincare brand DAMDAM, for insight. Ahead, a full Japanese beauty breakdown, including what it is, its benefits, and how to build a Japanese beauty routine. Plus, the final verdict on whether J-beauty might be your new go-to.

Giselle Go, Co-founder of DAMDAM

Giselle Go is the co-founder of DAMDAM, a next-generation Japanese skincare brand rooted in heritage, craftsmanship, and modern skin science. She co-founded the brand in 2019 with her husband, Philippe Terrien. Inspired by Japan’s rituals, ingredients, and artisanship, she built DAMDAM to bring a more thoughtful, slow approach to beauty—blending traditional ingredients like rice, matcha, and fermented botanicals with advanced skincare technology.

What is Japanese Beauty?

Japanese beauty is essentially skincare that’s rooted in simplicity, focusing on prevention, consistency, and long-term skin health. Go says it embraces a “fewer but better” philosophy, with multifunctional products that deliver results without complexity. In fact, the origins of J-beauty go back centuries and can be traced to Japanese rituals centered around heritage ingredients. These ingredients include rice, camellia, tea, and fermented botanicals. “Instead of chasing novelty and virality, the focus is on refining and perfecting ingredients, formulas, and rituals that have stood the test of time,” Go said.

Furthermore, while K-beauty focuses on “glass skin,” Go says “mochi skin” is the focus with J-beauty. This Japanese beauty ideal emphasizes elasticity and touchable softness rather than shine. With mochi skin, the skin appears plump, soft, smooth, bouncy, and deeply hydrated, mimicking the texture of fresh mochi rice cakes. “At its core, J-beauty is about longevity and preservation, not the transformation of appearance,” Go explains. “The goal is to enhance and support the skin’s barrier function so it remains healthy, supple, and resilient.”

How Does Japanese Beauty Benefit Your Skin?

What sets Japanese beauty apart from other skincare rituals is that it emphasizes healthy skin as the foundation for everything. “Rather than waiting for problems to appear, J-beauty emphasizes prevention through daily habits that support skin health over time,” Go explains. “Our formulations prioritize hydration, barrier support, and maintaining balance as the foundation before addressing targeted concerns,” Go explains. This is why ingredients that keep the skin resilient and stave off and reduce dryness, irritation are staples in Japanese beauty products. Key ingredients include:

  • Ceramides and amino acids
  • Japanese rice in all forms (think: rice bran, rice-derived actives, sake lees, and fermented rice) for brightening, smoothing, and hydration
  • Matcha and tea for antioxidants
  • Snow salt for skin detoxification
  • Plum and cherry blossoms for anti-glycation—AKA collagen and elastin protection
  • Snow mushroom for hydration
  • Shiso for omegas 3, 6, and 9
  • Japanese citrus like amanatsu and yuzu for radiance

What’s more, these skin-loving ingredients are equally gentle and effective. While other skincare methods layer on product after product and tout harsh acids that can change the appearance of your skin (think: chemical exfoliators), Go says Japanese beauty products work harmoniously with the skin. The end result: Skin that is radiant, resilient, and healthy from the inside out.

How to Build a Japanese Beauty Routine

“One of the biggest misconceptions about J-beauty is that it requires a complicated routine,” Go says, adding: “The goal is not to use more products. It’s to support the skin’s ability to function as a protective organ.” Getting rid of lengthy, multi-step skincare routines, taking a “less is more” approach, and consistently using the right products in the correct sequence is key to nailing a Japanese beauty routine.

Step 1: Double cleanse

Every solid J-beauty routine begins with a double cleanse. “Start with a cleansing oil to effectively remove sunscreen and makeup without stripping the skin,” says Go. Then, follow up with a water-based, creamy scrub cleanser. This type of cleanser is ideal for removing excess buildup because it contains surfactants, tiny, abrasive particles, and creamy emollients that, together, gently cleanse and buff away dead skin cells without irritation and lock in moisture.

Step 2: Hydrate

After cleansing, it’s time to start hydrating your skin. This step is crucial because hydration is one of the cornerstones of Japanese beauty. According to Go, an essence—sometimes called a “softener” or “hydrating essence” in Japan—is used here since it replenishes and keeps water content in the skin.

Step 3: Targeted Treatment

The third step of a J-beauty skincare routine involves honing in on specifically what your skin needs. This could be anything from diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles to fading dark spots or pigmentation, improving texture and firmness, calming redness and irritation, treating acne and preventing breakouts, and everything in between.

Of course, the product you use here will depend on what your goals are for your skin. For pigmentation treatment, Go recommends using a product formulated with vitamin C, while products formulated with fermented ingredients such as rice ferment (e.g., sake) can address anti-aging and skin longevity concerns. Likewise, if you want to target the under-eye area, Go suggests using a product with matcha and bakuchi in the formula. These ingredients stimulate collagen and reduce the appearance of dark circles.

Step 4: Moisturize and apply SPF

Lastly, finish off your routine with a moisturizer, and apply an SPF on top in the morning. Go says this will lock in hydration and support the skin barrier, ultimately making it healthier and stronger over time. Contrary to popular opinion, though, you don’t need a heavy-duty moisturizer to do this. “Japanese formulas focus on lightweight textures that provide lasting hydration,” Go explains. This means that J-beauty moisturizers aren’t loaded with occlusive ingredients. Rather, they contain lightweight emollients, humectants, and water-binding polysaccharides. To put it in layman’s terms, you get a fast-absorbing, non-greasy formula that delivers deep, lasting hydration without the weight, making skin appear cushiony and radiant.

So, Is J-Beauty Worth the Hype?

As someone who’s tried countless skincare regimens and products over the years and liked less than five (seriously—it’s that low), I love how Japanese beauty doesn’t reinvent the wheel or ask you to invest in an elaborate skincare routine that’s timely and costly. Instead, it looks at existing products on the market and asks: “How can I make this better?” This means that Japanese beauty recognizes which skincare ingredients have stood the test of time, and formulates their products accordingly. “Japan has one of the world’s most sophisticated beauty industries,” Go explains. “This category is known for exceptionally high standards around safety, quality control, formulation precision, and texture development.” For a sensitive-skin girl like myself, knowing that the product I’m applying to my face has undergone years of research, testing, refinement, as well as meticulous regulations, is incredibly reassuring and calming.

My personal experience testing a J-Beauty routine

What’s more, Japanese beauty essences, serums, and eye creams are the most powerful and effective I’ve tried. Normally, serums have an adverse effect on my skin and dry it out even more, and I typically avoid eye creams because I have chronic dry eye disease and have to be super careful about applying products that could cause eye irritation and worsen the condition. So, imagine my surprise when DAMDAM’S Matcha Boost Restorative & Hydrating Eye Serum not only made my undereyes more radiant, but also didn’t cause any eye irritation. Clearly, there’s something to using products with time-honored ingredients.

That being said, the one and only caveat is that you won’t see results overnight, so the only way to reap the benefits is to build a solid Japanese beauty routine and follow it consistently, day in and day out. Plus, your skin will need anywhere from two to six weeks to adapt to your new routine, and you might experience increased redness, dryness, or the like during this time the same way I did. These changes are temporary, though, so it’s important to stay the course. After all, consistency is key, and giving my skin time to recalibrate to my J-beauty skincare routine ultimately made it more radiant, smooth, and soft to the touch. All in all, Japanese beauty delivers on what it promises, so I can confidently say that it is worth the hype.
