“Peace Can’t Last While Bandits Remain Armed” – Inuwa

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Katsina State, Dr. Mustapha Inuwa, has criticized ongoing peace negotiations with bandits.

He called the talks meaningless, noting that the armed groups have yet to surrender their weapons.

The former Secretary to the State Government made the remarks on Tuesday, highlighting the continued threat posed by the bandits despite claims of progress in peace talks.

Inuwa told newsmen that during several negotiation meetings, bandits were seen openly carrying rifles and dressed in military camouflage, raising serious doubts about the sincerity of the exercise.

“The government must ensure the disarmament of the bandits before any peace deal can be meaningful,” he said, stressing that peace agreements cannot succeed while armed groups continue to terrorize communities.

He noted that Katsina has witnessed multiple peace initiatives over the years, yet attacks have persisted.

Residents often attend dialogue sessions with fear, as many armed groups appear at meetings heavily armed. Inuwa added, “Peace cannot be sustained if bandits retain their weapons and continue to subject villagers to forced labour.”

The ADC chieftain urged the government to adopt a more proactive approach, emphasizing that disarmament must precede dialogue.

He warned that without a serious commitment to removing weapons from bandits, peace deals will remain symbolic and fail to protect citizens.
