Paul Heyman just made Seth Rollins vs. Cody Rhodes truly matter

I’ve been critical of WWE going with the Crown Jewel championship rings as a selling point for doing champion vs. champion matches at the upcoming Crown Jewel premium live event this coming Saturday in Perth, Australia. After all, why bother booking the strongest wrestlers in a match with little meaning — let’s be real, no one really cares one bit about those rings — ensuring someone has to take an unnecessary loss?

In the case of WWE Champion Cody Rhodes vs. World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins, Paul Heyman just changed the game completely. In fact, he made sure that match means so much more than that ring ever could.

During this week’s episode of Monday Night Raw in Dallas, Rollins caught up to Heyman backstage and asked him point break what will happen if he fails to defeat Rhodes.

After some ducking and dodging, Heyman finally gave it to him straight:

“If you lose to Cody Rhodes, you lose the locker room. You lose the faith of Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed that your vision is the one that leads us into the future. You throw away everything that we’ve built since WrestleMania. You throw away the fact that the entire Netflix era has been built around Seth Freakin’ Rollins, and you become nothing more in history than a de facto wannabe secondary champion. So, please, do yourself a favor and don’t lose.”

Hot damn!

Rollins pressed him again when he realized Heyman left himself out of his answer. So, again, what happens if he loses to Rhodes?

“If you lose to Cody Rhodes, at some point I have to ask myself why I picked you. I have to ask myself why I picked you over Roman Reigns.”

I couldn’t be any more sold on this match now.

Heyman could easily walk this back later and claim he was simply trying to motivate Rollins. He’s a weasel like that, something you could see while he was maneuvering in real time and Rollins wouldn’t accept it. But that makes Seth look even better, in my book.

This match matters a whole hell of a lot now, and I suddenly can’t wait for this weekend.
