Paratus, the pan-African telecommunications group led by Namibian telecom executive Schalk Erasmus, has expanded its regional presence with the official launch of Paratus Rwanda, reinforcing its plan to deepen connectivity and improve digital access across Africa.

Paratus's Rwanda launch reinforces the company’s drive to deliver fast, reliable internet services to more African businesses. The new arm will install and manage Starlink broadband solutions, giving companies in both urban and remote areas access to high-speed connectivity.

Paratus became the official African distributor of Starlink’s Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite services in 2023. The partnership allows Paratus to offer satellite-based broadband in several markets, bridging gaps in regions where fiber and mobile networks remain limited.

Expanding reach across Africa

Erasmus said the move aligns with Paratus’ goal of “building Africa’s quality network” through sustained investment in people, infrastructure and technology.

“Rwanda’s dynamic and fast-growing market fits perfectly with our long-term vision,” Erasmus said. “The addition of Paratus Rwanda strengthens our ability to deliver reliable, high-quality service to businesses across the country.”

The company plans to serve sectors including finance, retail, government, agriculture, tourism and nongovernmental organizations. By using Starlink’s technology, Paratus aims to support enterprises in regions that have long been constrained by a lack of dependable broadband access.

Reliable connectivity amid network disruptions

Following recent disruptions caused by subsea cable failures in parts of Africa, many businesses have begun looking for more resilient connectivity options. Starlink’s satellite network provides a flexible alternative, functioning both as a primary link for remote operations and a backup connection for urban users.

“We’re delighted to begin operations in Rwanda,” said Martin Cox, Chief Commercial Officer of Paratus Group. “This launch allows us to connect more people and help unlock new opportunities through reliable internet access.”

Strengthening digital inclusion

Starlink’s scalable satellite platform supports thousands of business locations worldwide, offering primary and backup connectivity, mobility solutions, and emergency communication services.

Paratus now operates in 15 countries, employs about 800 people, and delivers satellite connectivity in over 30 African markets. The group has invested heavily in the East-to-West Africa fibre route and maintains direct connections from Johannesburg to Europe and the UK.

Since taking over as CEO in 2022, Erasmus has steered a five-year growth plan aimed at adding 600,000 new connections by 2028. Earlier September, Paratus also launched Namibia’s first private LTE and 5G network after investing $34 million, connecting 50 towns and 80 communities.
