After a successful 10-day demonstration, the organizers of the nationwide hunger protests have announced that the protests will return on Tuesday , October 1.

On August 1, Nigerians took to the streets to air their grievances over the high cost of living, economic hardship, bad governance and hunger.

The protest which was meant to be peaceful however turned violent with hoodlums hijacking the peaceful march to steal, loot and destroy both government and private property especially in Northern Nigeria.

At least 40 peaceful protesters were also killed after being shot at by security operatives in Abuja, Niger, Kaduna and Bauchi States.

President Bola Tinubu in a nationwide broadcast on Sunday, August 2 appealed to the protesters to suspend the demonstrations but they vowed to continue until their demands are met.

The protesters demands include return of fuel subsidy, reduction in cost of governance and crash in food prices amongst others.

Other demands are; increase in the minimum wage to N250,000, the release of Nnamdi Kanu, and the adoption of a people-driven constitution.

The protest ended on Saturday, August 10 with a one million – man March across all the 36 states including the Federal Capital Territory.

One of the key organizers, Omoyele Sowore, said the demonstrations will resume on Nigeria’s Independence Day.

The former presidential candidate disclosed that meetings are ongoing to strategize on the next phase of the protests.

“This protest will resume at the beginning of October and might even start earlier depending on situational variables.”
