One-Legged Rugby Prodigy Olu Nkosibkulu Cheered After Scoring Three Tries for His School Team

A young South African rugby player, Olu Nkosibkulu, has become an online sensation after scoring three tries for his school team while playing with just one leg.

Olu, a pupil of Hankey Primary School, stunned spectators with his incredible speed and determination as he hopped down the wing to secure victory for his team. The crowd erupted in cheers and applause as the youngster crossed the try line multiple times.

The heartwarming video of his performance quickly went viral on Facebook, drawing praise and admiration from people across the world.

However, behind the inspiring story lies a deeper struggle. Olu’s parents revealed that their son has been living without a prosthetic leg for 10 years and are now appealing to the South African government to step in and assist with medical bills and provide him with an artificial leg.
Speaking proudly about her son’s resilience, Olu’s mother said: “”Olu is a very tough battler and when I was seven months pregnant a scan showed he had a serious right leg deformity.

“My doctor warned me I should terminate the pregnancy but I had already had three mis-carriages so I said as long as there is heartbeat that is enough. I had prayed to God for a child. Not a perfect child. And if he gave me a child I would accept it with love and that is what I have done since he was born.

“I have never regretted that decision and Olu does not accept he is different to his team mates. He just says he has one leg shorter than the other that’s all. He has the courage of a lion as anyone watching that video of him hopping down that wing will know and that video has made him a viral superstar. His father and I are prouder of him than words can ever express.”

His dad on his part said: “For him scoring just one try was more than I ever hoped for but he scored three and got half of his teams points. I am so proud of him and cannot wait till the next game” said the father-of-three who has an older son and daughter from a previous relationship.”

Olu on his part said: “I don’t see what all the fuss is about. I can get about as fast on one leg as I could on two and I have no fear of being tackled or tackling others. I don’t even think about how far I could go in rugby but in time if I get a prosthetic blade I could move into athletics like Oscar Pistorius did for South Africa.

“I have no handicap. Just one leg that is a little shorter than the other. My left leg is very strong and I can keep up with anyone.”

His rugby coach and school principal Tania Petersen said: “He started playing rugby earlier this year and he was convinced that he would make the team. Coming off with a hat trick of tries made all those watching from both sides extremely proud of him and it goes to show what an inclusive sport it is.

“Despite being born with one leg he continues to inspire all who know him both on and off the pitch and is fiercely competitive in all that he does.”
