A foreign national was killed and another person injured after two helicopters collided while attempting to land in Nepal‘s Everest region on Tuesday, police told AFP.

The aircraft crashed into each other as they approached a snow-covered landing site in Solukhumbu district.

Solukhumbu District Police Chief Nabin Raja Budhathoki confirmed that one foreign passenger died at the scene, while the injured person was taken to hospital.

“One foreigner is dead on the spot, and another injured person has been taken to the hospital,” Nabin Raja Budhathoki told AFP.

Helicopters are commonly used in Nepal to transport tourists, climbers and supplies, as well as conduct emergency evacuations.

However, the country’s rugged Himalayan terrain and unpredictable weather make flying particularly risky.

Nepal is home to eight of the world’s 14 highest mountains, including Mount Everest, and attracts thousands of international climbers and trekkers each year.
