The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has introduced a new update to its passport tracking system aimed at improving transparency and reducing complaints from passport applicants nationwide.

The NIS disclosed that the update became necessary following observations that hundreds of passports already produced remained uncollected at various passport offices, leading to growing frustration and repeated enquiries from applicants.

In a post shared via its official X (formerly Twitter) page on Thursday, the NIS announced the introduction of a new status as part of the enhancement drive.

It reads in part, “NIS has added a new status tagged ‘Produced (Passport Produced, ready for collection)’ to its online passport tracking platform. The feature clearly informs applicants when their passports have been successfully produced and are ready for collection.”

According to the NIS, the update builds on the existing tracking stages and provides clearer, real-time information on the status of passport applications.

It allows applicants who opted for physical collection to know when their passports are ready for pick-up, while those who selected courier delivery can also track passports that have been produced but are yet to be delivered.

The NIS noted that the absence of this clear status indicator previously resulted in delays in collection, overcrowding at passport offices, and avoidable complaints from applicants who were unsure whether their passports had been produced.

It said by introducing the new “Produced” status, it expects to ease pressure on its offices, enhance user experience, and encourage timely collection of passports.

The NIS reaffirmed its commitment to deploying efficient, technology-driven solutions that improve service delivery, stressing that the update aligns with global best practices in passport administration and citizen-focused service provision.

Applicants were advised to regularly check the official passport tracking portal https://track.immigration.gov.ng for updates on their application status.
