The federal government of Nigeria has pledged to restore electricity to eight local government areas of Sokoto State, after being without power for about a decade.

The Minister of Power, Adelabu Adebayo, made the pledge recently after the state governor, Ahmed Aliyu, raised the issue during an official visit to his office.

Following the minister’s pledge, a delegation from the Ministry of Power was dispatched to assess the affected areas to reinstate electricity supply.

The Director of Distribution at the Federal Ministry of Power, Mustafa Baba Umarah, while speaking during the assessment exercise at the weekend in Sokoto, explained that the federal government’s team would carefully study the nature of the problems causing the blackout in the affected communities and report back for necessary action.

He assured of the government’s commitment to ensuring that all Nigerians have access to electricity, regardless of their location.

The state’s Commissioner for Energy, Sanusi Dan Fulani, stated that restoring electricity in the affected areas aligns with the efforts of Governor Aliyu’s administration to stimulate economic activities, particularly in rural areas.

The commissioner underscored the importance of electricity supply for societal development in the eastern zone of the state, known as the food basket.

He appealed for support from the benefiting communities to ensure the success of the restoration project.

He explained, “The eight local government areas earmarked for reconnection to the national grid are Isa, Sabon Birni, Goronyo, Wurno, Rabah, Gada, Illela and Gwadabawa.”
