Nigeria–France Sports Awards celebrate African sporting excellence in Paris today

The third edition of the Nigeria–France Sports Awards hold today on October 20, 2025, at the Maison Des Arts in Paris, celebrating outstanding Nigerian and African athletes, ex-players, and key stakeholders who have made remarkable contributions to the world of sports.

According to the organiser, Ojora Babatunde, the awards were “born out of a deep desire to celebrate the outstanding contributions of Nigerian and African athletes, especially those who have excelled globally and in the diaspora.”

He explained France was chosen as the host because it “is home to one of the largest African diasporas in Europe and a strong hub for African football talent,” making it a perfect bridge “between Africa and Europe, while giving recognition to talents who might otherwise go unnoticed outside their home countries.”

Babatunde described the Nigeria–France Sports Awards as “a celebration of sporting excellence,” noting that nominees in each category were carefully selected by a panel of journalists and sports administrators based on the performances of Nigerian athletes throughout 2025.

“When you look at the award category for the Sports Commissioner of the Year, we took into consideration the performances of each state and the FCT at the National Sports Festival and the strides they have achieved within 12 months,” he said. “The results are there for our panel to consider and review.”

Beyond athletic achievements, Babatunde emphasized that the awards also recognize character and social impact.

“Yes, while on-field performance remains a major criterion, we place strong emphasis on character, leadership, and off-field contributions.

Athletes who have given back to their communities, used their platforms for advocacy, or contributed to youth and grassroots development are highly regarded. We believe sports can be a powerful tool for social change, and we want to honour those who embody that spirit,” he explained.

Looking ahead, Babatunde expressed optimism about the future of the event and its potential impact on African sports. “We hope the Nigeria–France Sports Awards becomes a beacon of inspiration — showing young African athletes that their hard work can be recognized on an international stage,” he said.

“By spotlighting stories of perseverance, talent, and community contribution, we aim to motivate the next generation and support the growth of sports infrastructure and development programs in Africa and across the diaspora.”

He also revealed that plans are underway to bring the event to Nigeria.

“The success of the past editions has reaffirmed our belief in the importance of this platform. We are committed to making it an annual tradition, and yes, plans are already underway to host a version of the event in Nigeria,” he confirmed.

“Bringing it home will further amplify its reach and impact, allowing local fans, athletes, and stakeholders to take active part in the celebration.”

The Nigeria–France Sports Awards, now in its third edition, continues to position itself as one of the foremost platforms honouring African sporting excellence abroad.

By recognising not just on-field achievements but also leadership, philanthropy, and social influence, the event serves as a reminder that sport extends beyond competition — it is a unifying force that drives change, empowers communities, and inspires generations.

As Paris prepares to host yet another celebration of African talent, the awards are set to once again highlight the brilliance and resilience of Nigerian and African athletes who continue to make their mark on the global stage.
