Four robbers are still on the run after robbing the biggest museum in the world, the Louvre, and escaping with eight pieces of "priceless" from the museum in Paris. The gang dressed in hi-vis jackets rode a basket lift up the Louvre s facade, forced a window open before smashing into display cases and fleeing with priceless Napoleonic jewels on Sunday,  Oct. 19. The four-minute heist took place just after opening, with visitors already inside. Paris public prosecutor Laure Beccuau announced police were now hunting four suspects from the gang who had apparently disguised themselves as construction workers. The four men had their faces "covered" and fled the iconic art gallery "on high-powered scooters," the magistrate told BFMTV. Their target was the gilded Apollon Gallery where the Crown Diamonds are displayed, including the Regent, the Sancy and the Hortensia.  The thieves smashed two display cases and fled on motorbikes. Alarms brought Louvre security agents to the room, forcing the intruders to bolt, but the theft was already done. Eight objects were taken, according to officials: a sapphire diadem, necklace and single earring from a matching set linked to 19th-century French queens Marie-Amlie and Hortense; an emerald necklace and earrings from the matching set of Empress Marie-Louise, Napoleon Bonapartes second wife; a reliquary brooch; Empress Eugnies diadem; and her large corsage-bow brooch a prized 19th-century imperial ensemble. However, one piece of jewellery was left behind: the crown of Empress Eugenie, complete with its 1,354 diamonds and 56 emeralds. It was reportedly broken when it was discarded by the group as they fled from the scene. A concrete saw was pictured lying on the street outside the Louvre, as was a yellow vest seemingly used by the group to pass themselves off as construction workers.  Other items found by police at the scene included two angle grinders, a blowtorch, gasoline, gloves, a walkie-talkie and a blanket. The heist is thought to be one of Frances most brazen. Ariel Weil, the mayor of central Paris, compared the robbers to one of Frances most famous fictional characters gentleman thief Arsne Lupin. He told Le Parisien: "Its been a movie script up until now. Its hard to imagine that its seemingly so easy to burglarize the Louvre." The world-famous site is closed to visitors for the rest of the day as an investigation is launched into the theft. The museums own X account posted it would "remain closed today for exceptional reasons." The Louvre is the biggest museum in the world, and is home to renowned artworks including Leonardo da Vincis Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo statue. Watch videos below.  And here are the first images from the Louvre heist inside the Apollo Gallery, where it all took place.A man dressed as a construction worker breaks open a display case. Museum visitors walk by, unaware that a robbery is unfolding right beside them. How does something so https://t.co/whDblfNiYY pic.twitter.com/LQv6jCFqs9 Muse (@xmuse_) October 19, 2025    The thieves approached the Louvre building from the outside, at an area where building work was taking place. A truck and a goods lift were used to access the museum.
