Mercedes-Benz Ponders About Fixable Headlights

As part of a new circularity plan known as Tomorrow XX, Mercedes is rethinking the way it makes some components. For example, its headlights are likely to get a design change.

Typically, modern headlight assemblies use glue as the primary bonding agent. While it is possible to open one of these units after it has been glued in place, the process is so complicated and tedious that it is practically beyond the reach of the average owner.

Because of this, after minor damage, the entire light must be replaced. To make it easier to repair the lights, Mercedes wants to assemble them with screws. The change sounds simple, but the implications are significant. If the lens of a headlight is damaged by a stone, for example, it could simply be replaced. This would eliminate the need to replace the entire light, which can cost more than 2,500 euros.

Mercedes is also thinking about other components on the vehicle to make repairs and recycling easier.
